When super storm Sandy recently hit she showed us in the United States and all around the world just how vulnerable we are to the wrath of Mother Nature. In addition to the tragic loss of life and property, millions of travelers had their plans upended as flights were delayed or canceled. So how can you protect your travel investment against an unexpected event? One way cautious travelers can secure their payments is with travel insurance.
What does travel insurance provide?
With airlines adding fees for everything from snacks to bathroom privileges, you may not consider paying for travel protection insurance. But before you set out on the trip of a lifetime, think about some of the benefits a good travel insurance policy can offer. Here are some of the events that might be covered: medical expenses (in the event that your health insurance does not provide coverage), loss of luggage or equipment, trip cancellation, theft and evacuation in the case of natural disaster or political upheaval.
Do I really need it?
According to Peter Greenberg, Travel Ambassador for AARP, the further you travel and higher your travel costs, the more you should consider travel protection insurance. ?If you are taking a short haul flight to Wichita to visit Aunt Sally, you probably don?t need it, but if you spent $4,000.00 for a cruise with airfare, you should get it.? Then if your cruise leaves from Miami, but your flight from Boston is snowed in and you miss the boat, you?ll be covered. Greenberg also advises that you may not need to pay for coverage for every scenario. Some insurance companies will let you buy ?a la carte? coverage for single events such as loss of luggage and belongings or additional medical coverage. Some credit card companies? offer limited travel insurance if you pay for your trip with their card. Check with your credit card company before you assume this to be the case. Also, your homeowner?s insurance policy may cover loss of belongings while traveling.
Where do I buy travel protection insurance?
If you have checked your homeowner?s, health and credit card policies and decide you still need the peace of mind of travel insurance, you have options. There are quite a few reputable online travel insurance firms that you can find. Be advised that most knowledgeable travel agents strongly advise against purchasing insurance from your cruise line or tour operator as they have been known to go out of business, leaving their clients high and dry.
What will I pay?
After you spend time on research, you will probably find that choosing a package insurance plan will be the most economical way to get the coverage you need for your journey. A package generally includes trip cancellation and interruption, baggage loss or delay, medical and dental coverage and possibly evacuation and accidental death. These plans generally run from approximately $150.00 to about $500.00. There does not seem to be too much difference between big companies although some do not cover residents of certain geographical areas. Though you may wince when you pay that extra money, you might be glad when that next super storm hits.
