Why some people get zits and others don't

Feb. 28, 2013 ? The bacteria that cause acne live on everyone's skin, yet one in five people is lucky enough to develop only an occasional pimple over a lifetime. What's their secret?

In a boon for teenagers everywhere, a UCLA study conducted with researchers at Washington University in St. Louis and the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute has discovered that acne bacteria contain "bad" strains associated with pimples and "good" strains that may protect the skin.

The findings, published in the Feb. 28 edition of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, could lead to a myriad of new therapies to prevent and treat the disfiguring skin disorder.

"We learned that not all acne bacteria trigger pimples ? one strain may actually help keep skin healthy," said lead author Huiying Li, an assistant professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We hope to apply our findings to develop new strategies that stop blemishes before they start, and enable dermatologists to customize treatment to each patient's unique cocktail of skin bacteria."

The scientists looked at a tiny microbe with a big name: Propionibacterium acnes, bacteria that thrive in the oily depths of our pores. When the bacteria aggravate the immune system, they cause the swollen, red bumps associated with acne.

Using over-the-counter pore-cleansing strips, LA BioMed and UCLA researchers lifted P. acnes bacteria from the noses of 49 pimply and 52 clear-skinned volunteers. After extracting the microbial DNA from the strips, Li's laboratory tracked a genetic marker to identify the bacterial strains in each volunteer's pores and recorded whether the person suffered from acne.

Next, Li's lab cultured the bacteria from the strips to isolate more than 1,000 strains. Washington University scientists sequenced the genomes of 66 of the P. acnes strains, enabling UCLA co-first author Shuta Tomida to zero in on genes unique to each strain.

"We were interested to learn that the bacterial strains looked very different when taken from diseased skin, compared to healthy skin," said co-author Dr. Noah Craft, a dermatologist and director of the Center for Immunotherapeutics Research at LA BioMed at Harbor?UCLA Medical Center. "Two unique strains of P. acnes appeared in one out of five volunteers with acne but rarely occurred in clear-skinned people."

The biggest discovery was still to come.

"We were extremely excited to uncover a third strain of P. acnes that's common in healthy skin yet rarely found when acne is present," said Li, who is also a member of UCLA's Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging. "We suspect that this strain contains a natural defense mechanism that enables it to recognize attackers and destroy them before they infect the bacterial cell."

Offering new hope to acne sufferers, the researchers believe that increasing the body's friendly strain of P. acnes through the use of a simple cream or lotion may help calm spotty complexions.

"This P. acnes strain may protect the skin, much like yogurt's live bacteria help defend the gut from harmful bugs," Li said. "Our next step will be to investigate whether a probiotic cream can block bad bacteria from invading the skin and prevent pimples before they start."

Additional studies will focus on exploring new drugs that kill bad strains of P. acnes while preserving the good ones; the use of viruses to kill acne-related bacteria; and a simple skin test to predict whether a person will develop aggressive acne in the future.

"Our research underscores the importance of strain-level analysis of the world of human microbes to define the role of bacteria in health and disease," said co-author George Weinstock, associate director of the Genome Institute and professor of genetics at Washington University in St. Louis. "This type of analysis has a much higher resolution than prior studies that relied on bacterial cultures or only made distinctions between bacterial species."

Acne affects 80 percent of Americans at some point in their lives, yet scientists know little about what causes the disorder and have made limited progress in developing new strategies for treating it. Dermatologists' arsenal of anti-acne tools ? benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics and Accutane (isotretinoin) ? hasn't expanded in decades. Most severe cases of acne don't respond to antibiotics, and Accutane can produce serious side effects.

The research was supported by a grant (UH2AR057503) from the National Institutes of Health's Human Microbiome Project through the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

First lady announces effort to help kids exercise

(AP) ? Imagine students learning their ABCs while dancing, or memorizing multiplication tables while doing jumping jacks.

Some schools are using both methods of instruction, and Michelle Obama would like to see more of them use other creative ways to help students get the recommended hour of daily exercise.

In Chicago Thursday, the first lady announced a new public-private partnership to help schools do just that. "Let's Move Active Schools" starts with a website, www.letsmoveschools.org , where school officials and others can sign up to get started.

Mrs. Obama said too many penny-pinched schools have either cut spending on physical education or eliminated it outright to put the money toward classroom instruction. But the first lady who starts most days with a workout ? and other advocates of helping today's largely sedentary kids move their bodies ? say that's a false choice, since studies that show exercise helps youngsters focus and do well in school.

The effort is one of the newest parts of Mrs. Obama's 3-year-old campaign against childhood obesity, known as "Let's Move," which she has spent the week promoting.

"With each passing year, schools feel like it's just getting harder to find the time, the money and the will to help our kids be active. But just because it's hard doesn't mean we should stop trying," the first lady said. "It means we should try harder. It means that all of us ? not just educators, but businesses and nonprofits and ordinary citizens ? we all need to dig a little deeper, start getting more creative."

She was joined at McCormick Place in her hometown by several Olympians, including gymnasts Dominique Dawes and Gabby Douglas, sprinter Allyson Felix, tennis player Serena Williams and decathlete Ashton Eaton, along with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and triathlete Sarah Reinertsen, whose left leg was amputated above the knee when she was a child, and other athletes. Thousands of students from city middle schools also were being brought in for the event.

Research shows that daily exercise has a positive influence on academic performance, but kids today spend too much time sitting, mostly in school but also outside the classroom while watching TV, playing video games or surfing the Internet. Federal guidelines recommend that children ages 6-17 get at least 60 minutes of exercise daily, which can be racked up through multiple spurts of activity throughout the day.

The White House says the most current data, from 2007, shows that just 4 percent of elementary schools, 8 percent of middle schools and 2 percent of high schools provided daily physical education.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said he's proof of the link between exercise and academic performance. As a boy, he said, he had a hard time sitting still in class but that exercise helped him focus.

"What's true for me is true for many of our nation's children," he said in an interview.

Duncan, who played basketball professionally in Australia, said the choice is not between physical activity or academics, especially with about one-third of U.S. kids either overweight or obese and at higher risk for life-threatening illnesses like heart disease or diabetes.

"It's got to be both," he said. Duncan cited the examples of students learning the alphabet while dancing or memorizing multiplication tables while doing jumping jacks.

Mrs. Obama called on school staff, families and communities to help get 50,000 schools, about half the number of public schools in the U.S., involved in the program over the next five years.

The President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation will oversee the program. Funding and other resources will come from Nike Inc., the GENYOUth Foundation, ChildObesity180, Kaiser Permanente and the General Mills Foundation.

Under the new initiative, modest grants will be available from the Education Department to help some programs get started. The GENYOUth Foundation and ChildObesity180 also will be awarding grants.

Nike has committed $50 million to the effort over the next five years; the remaining groups together have pledged more than $20 million.

Williams said it's important to structure the activity so that it doesn't feel like a workout.

"I had fun and I didn't realize it was work," she said about her years of practice before becoming one of America's top tennis players.

Transforming Cities with Transit explores the complex process of transit and land-use integration in rapidly growing cities in developing countries. As one of the most promising strategies for advancing environmental sustainability, economic competitiveness, and socially inclusive development in fast-growing cities, transit and land-use integration is increasingly being embraced by policy-makers at all levels of government.

This book focuses on identifying barriers to and opportunities for effective coordination of transport infrastructure and urban development. Global best-case practices of transit-oriented metropolises that have direct relevance to cities in developing countries are first introduced. Key institutional, regulatory, and financial constraints that hamper integration and opportunities to utilize transit to guide sustainable urban development are examined in selected cities in developing countries. For this, the book analyzes their Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems and their impact on land development. The book formulates recommendations and implementation strategies to overcome barriers and take advantage of opportunities.

It asserts that unprecedented opportunities have and will continue to arise for the successful integration of transit and land development in much of the developing world. Many cities in developing countries currently exhibit the pre-requisites ? e.g., rapid growth, rising real incomes, and increased motorization and congestion levels ? for BRT and railway investments to trigger meaningful land-use changes in economically and financially viable ways. Recommendations for creating more sustainable cities of the future range from macro-level strategies that influence land development and governance at the metropolitan scale to micro-level initiatives, like Transit Oriented Development (TOD), that can radically transform development patterns at the neighborhood level.

The book will be of interest to a wide and diverse audience, including mayors, council members and other national and local policy makers, urban and transportation planners, transit-agency officials, and developers and staff of development financial institutions and others involved with TOD projects in rapidly growing and motorizing cities of the developing world.

?Among the world?s developing regions, Asia has undoubtedly seen the most dramatic overall transformation since 2000. Assessed against the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets, Asia?s success in areas like health, education, and access to drinking water all stand out globally. At the same time, Asia?s progress is far from complete. It still has huge poverty challenges and its environmental challenges are growing rapidly.

This paper discusses key challenges faced throughout the Asia and the Pacific region as a number of its developing economies graduate from low-income status to middle-income status at the same time as the region remains home to the majority of the world?s poor people and a number of fragile states. The region is gaining increased influence in the world economy but is still grappling to overcome interrelated challenges of poverty and sustainable development, so its priorities will be of significant importance in informing the contents of any post-2015 global development framework. Drawing from the ongoing lessons of the Millennium Development Goal process, this paper suggests a conceptual framework for setting a new generation of goals and, informed by these concepts, proposes an intergovernmental approach to implementation. The ?ZEN? framework stresses the distinct challenges of achieving zero extreme poverty (Z), setting country-specific ?Epsilon? benchmarks for broader development challenges (E), and promoting environmental sustainability both within and across borders (N).

Judge refuses to dismiss charges in WikiLeaks case

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? An Army private accused of sending classified material to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks has not been denied a speedy trial despite his lengthy pretrial confinement, and the charges against him will stand, a military judge ruled Thursday.

Attorneys for Pfc. Bradley Manning had asked the judge to dismiss all charges against the former intelligence analyst because he's been detained for two years and nine months. Defense attorney David Coombs argued that prosecutors dragged their feet and that a commander rubber-stamped their requests for delay after delay.

Prosecutors said the delays were reasonable, given the complexity of the case and the volume of classified material involved. The military judge, Col. Denise Lind, agreed with prosecutors, with a few minor exceptions. She denied the defense motion.

Manning faces 22 charges, including aiding the enemy, which carries a maximum life sentence. His court-martial is scheduled to start in June at Fort Meade, an Army base between Baltimore and Washington.

The 25-year-old Oklahoma native is accused of sending hundreds of thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan battlefield reports, State Department diplomatic cables, other classified records and two battlefield video clips to WikiLeaks in 2009 and 2010 while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad.

The Obama administration has said releasing the information threatened valuable military and diplomatic sources and strained America's relations with other governments. Experts say that by seeking to punish Manning, the administration is sending a strong message that such leaks will not be tolerated.

Manning supporters consider him a whistleblowing hero whose actions exposed war crimes and helped trigger the Middle Eastern pro-democracy uprisings known as the Arab Spring in late 2010. In an online chat with a confidant-turned-government informant, Manning said he leaked the material because he wanted "people to see the truth."

Under military rules, defendants must be arraigned no more than 120 days after they are charged, although exceptions can be granted for a variety of reasons, including the need to access classified material. Manning was arrested in May 2010 and was detained for 635 days before his arraignment last February. But Lind ruled that only 90 days of that time counted against the 120-day clock and that the rest of the delays were reasonable.

The case is unprecedented in its complexity, and delays were inevitable as the government worked to gain access to a trove of classified material and share it with the defense, Lind said in announcing her ruling.

Manning's supporters around the world held events Saturday to mark his 1,000 days in confinement.

Manning has offered to plead guilty to reduced charges for 10 of the 22 counts he faces. Lind was scheduled to consider on Thursday whether to accept that plea after questioning Manning under oath about his actions. If she were to accept the plea, he would face 20 years in prison on those charges.

However, Manning has not reached a plea deal with prosecutors. Even if the plea were to be accepted, prosecutors could still pursue convictions on the other charges, including aiding the enemy and several counts of theft of government property.

Manning has won few significant victories in his lengthy pretrial proceedings, which included testimony from the soldier about how he was deprived of his clothing and told to stand at attention naked while on suicide watch at the maximum-security Marine Corps brig at Quantico, Va. He has since been transferred to medium-security confinement at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Lind ruled that Manning was illegally punished for part of the time he spent at Quantico and that 112 days should be cut from any prison sentence he receives if convicted.

Canadians heading into retirement owing money on ... - Financial Post

There were some enlightening facts about debt in a study released this week that included the headline-making finding that half of?Canadians over 50 believe they will exhaust their retirement savings within 10 years of leaving the workforce.

The study, conducted for the Investor Education Fund, found that?24% of the homeowners surveyed expect to have debt on their principal residence after they retire.?Of those who expect to owe money on their homes when they retire, more than one-quarter?said they don?t know how they will pay it off.

?Retiring with debt puts extra strain on your income,??said Tom Hamza, president of the IEF. ?If you go into retirement with inadequate savings in the first place, you may be on shaky ground.?

It is fairly well established that Canadians aren?t putting aside enough money for retirement, but the details in the study conducted by The Brondesbury Group in January of 2013 are ?unsettling,? Mr. Hamza said.

The IEF is funded by regulators with a mandate to help educate investors. Its website features tools such as a cash flow calculator that estimates how long an investment ?nest egg? will last in retirement.

Lipid researcher, 98, reports on the dietary causes of heart disease

Feb. 27, 2013 ? A 98-year-old researcher argues that, contrary to decades of clinical assumptions and advice to patients, dietary cholesterol is good for your heart -- unless that cholesterol is unnaturally oxidized (by frying foods in reused oil, eating lots of polyunsaturated fats, or smoking).

The researcher, Fred Kummerow, an emeritus professor of comparative biosciences at the University of Illinois, has spent more than six decades studying the dietary factors that contribute to heart disease. In a new paper in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Disease, he reviews the research on lipid metabolism and heart disease with a focus on the consumption of oxidized cholesterol -- in his view a primary contributor to heart disease.

"Oxidized lipids contribute to heart disease both by increasing deposition of calcium on the arterial wall, a major hallmark of atherosclerosis, and by interrupting blood flow, a major contributor to heart attack and sudden death," Kummerow wrote in the review.

Over his 60-plus-year career, Kummerow has painstakingly collected and analyzed the findings that together reveal the underlying mechanisms linking oxidized cholesterol (and trans fats) to heart disease.

Many of Kummerow's insights come from his relentless focus on the physical and biochemical changes that occur in the arteries of people with heart disease. For example, he has worked with surgeons to retrieve and examine the arteries of people suffering from heart disease, and has compared his findings with those obtained in animal experiments.

He and his colleagues first reported in 2001 that the arteries of people who had had bypass operations contained elevated levels of sphingomyelin (SFING-oh-my-uh-lin), one of several phospholipids (phosphate-containing lipids) that make up the membranes of all cells. The bypass patients also had significantly more oxidized cholesterols (oxysterols) in their plasma and tissues than people who had not been diagnosed with heart disease.

Human cells incubated with the blood plasma of the cardiac patients also picked up significantly more calcium from the culture medium than cells incubated in the plasma of healthy patients. When the researchers added oxysterols to the healthy plasma, the proportion of sphingomyelin in the cells increased, as did the uptake of calcium.

Earlier research, including studies conducted by medical pioneer Michael DeBakey, noted that the most problematic plaques in patients with heart disease occurred at the branch-points of the arteries of the heart. Kummerow followed up on these reports by looking at the phospholipid content of the arterial walls in pigs and humans. He found (and reported in 1994) that the branch points of the arteries in humans and in swine also had significantly more sphingomyelin than other regions of the same arteries.

For Kummerow, the increase in sphingomyelin was a prime suspect in the blocked and calcified arteries of the cardiac patients. He had already found that the arteries of the newborn human placenta contained only about 10 percent sphingomyelin and 50 percent phosphatidylcholine (FOSS-fuh-tih-dul-COH-lean), another important phospholipid component of cell membranes.

"But when we looked at the arteries of people who had had bypass operations, we found up to 40 percent sphingomyelin and about 27 percent phosphatidylcholine," Kummerow said. "It took us many more years to discover that when you added large amounts of oxysterols to the cells, then the phosphatidylcholine changed to sphingomyelin."

Further evidence supported sphingomyelin's starring role in atherosclerosis. When Kummerow and his colleagues compared the blocked and unblocked arteries of patients needing second bypass operations, they found that the arteries with blockages contained twice as much sphingomyelin as the unblocked arteries. The calcium content of the blocked arteries (6,345 parts per million) was also much higher than that of the unblocked arteries (182 ppm).

Other studies had demonstrated a link between increases in sphingomyelin and the deposit of calcium in the coronary arteries. The mechanism by which this occurred was unclear, however. Kummerow's team searched the literature and found a 1967 study that showed that in the presence of certain salts (in the blood, for example), lipids like sphingomyelin develop a negative charge. This explains the attraction of the positively charged calcium to the arterial wall when high amounts of sphingomyelin are present, Kummerow said.

"So there was a negative charge on the wall of this artery, and it attracted calcium from the blood until it calcified the whole artery," he said.

Oxidized fats contribute to heart disease (and sudden death from heart attacks) in an additional way, Kummerow said. He and his collaborators found that when the low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the so-called "bad cholesterol") is oxidized, it increases the synthesis of a blood-clotting agent, called thromboxane, in the platelets.

If someone eats a diet rich in oxysterols and trans fats and also smokes, he or she is endangering the heart in three distinct ways, Kummerow said. The oxysterols enhance calcification of the arteries and promote the synthesis of a clotting agent. And the trans fats and cigarette smoke interfere with the production of a compound, prostacyclin, which normally keeps the blood fluid.

"And that causes 600,000 deaths in this country each year," Kummerow said.

Kummerow is the author of "Cholesterol Won't Kill You, But Trans Fats Could."

Why We Sometimes Shouldn't Write | Real Intent

written in slumberI have a long history of offending people with my writing. I?ve often wondered about this, because I don?t necessarily have a long history of offending people in person. Still, I?m not terribly articulate in person, so I find myself preferring to interact in some situations through writing ??a way of ensuring that my halting words are polished to reflect my intent???because I?care?that I not offend (which is why my first two statements are so ironic). In short, I really do?get?Moses. Heaven would be kind to send me some kind of spokesperson, even though my little stewardship obviously doesn?t warrant it.

I misstepped again recently, even after elucidating in a discussion with writer friends the principles of why writing some things is unwise. I pondered about it this morning, asking the Lord why I wasn?t restrained from pushing the send button when I had clearly asked and waited for an answer.

I needed to learn something in the distraught hours of silence after.

Nephi commented that he was not powerful as a writer.

And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I?mighty?in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man?speaketh?by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men.

Moroni mourned that he and other prophetic writers collectively, were not powerful in writing.

And I said unto him: Lord, the Gentiles will?mock?at these things, because of our?weakness?in writing; for Lord thou hast made us?mighty?in word by faith, but thou hast not made us mighty in writing; for thou hast made all this people that they could speak much, because of the Holy Ghost which thou hast given them;

And thou hast made us that we could write but little, because of the?awkwardness?of our hands. Behold, thou hast not made us mighty in?writing?like unto the brother of Jared, for thou madest him that the things which he?wrote?were mighty even as thou art, unto the overpowering of man to read them.

Thou hast also made our words powerful and great, even that we?cannot?write them; wherefore, when we write we behold our?weakness, and stumble because of the placing of our words; and I fear lest the Gentiles shall?mock?at our words.

writer

As someone who has loved to write since childhood, and who has gained a great deal of insight from what these two gentlemen have written, I?ve long scratched my head at these statements (not to mention developed an incredible curiosity to read the words of the Brother of Jared).

?

What is the difference between writing and hearing in person the same truth?

There was a recent flap over a local leader who shared a copy of his talk with a member of his congregation. A local paper antagonistic to the Church, which uses any example of poor judgment to make sweeping generalizations about our faith, picked up the story, which had by that time gone viral, and added its gleeful observations. The statements this Church leader made, written indelibly in binary, were being used by people from entirely different perspectives to justify their own positions. He wisely wasn?t returning any phone calls, poor guy.

We discussed the content of his talk in a group of writer friends, and agreed that it would be hard to know what issues he was addressing that were specific to the people in his stewardship, what the tone of his delivery communicated that we can?t confine to the written word, and what a listening congregant might have heard. We discussed the experience of Oliver, as he was corrected in how he should interact with those he led.

Behold, I say unto thee,?Oliver, that it shall be given unto thee that thou shalt be heard by the church in all things whatsoever thou shalt teach them by the?Comforter, concerning the revelations and commandments which I have given.??

And if thou art?led?at any time by the Comforter to?speak?or teach, or at all times by the way of commandment unto the church, thou mayest do it.

But thou shalt not write by way of?commandment, but by wisdom;

We remembered the counsel recently reiterated that General Authority addresses to local areas should not be recorded or transcribed and circulated, and Elder Oaks? locally given statement along the lines of ?I?d like to know whether I?m speaking to the stake or the whole world,? and agreed that there are differing circumstances that require specific approaches, and those specifics will be spoken, not written. We are too given to extrapolating generalities from specifics to have such broad access to all these written words.

Even after that conversation, I acted on an inspiration to share a comforting insight with someone by writing it instead of going to her and sharing it personally. In the quiet, hand-wringing hours after, I thought of all the different ways that communication could have gone had it been in person. I might have spoken part of my words instead of all. I might have realized that some wounds must bleed out before they can be bandaged. I might have been inspired with additional comforts. I would have known how it was received. All sorts of other things could have been communicated: love, peace, solidarity, strength. It occurred to me that the Holy Spirit seldom delivers well-crafted letters to me, but instead gives them to me lines at a time, and waits for me to ask for more, tailoring the message to my reactions as it unfolded.

Why would I expect to engage in healthy communication differently than God does?

Now I realize that it is the function of the Holy Spirit to structure revelation in the mind of the receiver. I might struggle and refine, feeling the need to polish my thoughts so that they most perfectly represent what is in my mind, but committing them to writing restricts how they can be used by other people?s minds.?The Holy Spirit will take words and combine with that person?s own experience, perceptions, and needs to create a magic bullet.?It is not our business to restrict the workings of the Holy Spirit, which is laid out quite nicely by John:

But the?Comforter,?which is?the?Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my?name, he shall?teach?you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

When anyone speaks, people who listen by the Holy Spirit don?t just hear what they want to hear; they hear what God wants them to hear. They remember later, not from their notes but from their memory, what they need to know at that time. We are a culture that distrusts our gut, our memory, our changing perspectives. However, when we write, people must navigate our minds to find the truth for themselves, and it dances hazardously around priestcraft, where we set ourselves between that person and the Holy Spirit.

As an avid journaler, I am continually reminded of the changes in my perspective that occur over time as I reread old entries, and have tried to learn to write like Joseph?? just the facts ??and let myself interpret them at various times in my life according to the perspective of that time. It?s hard.

You can bet I sweat bullets writing this.

As a reader, you will have to navigate the shoals and undertows, rocks and open sea of my mind to find any kernel of meaning for yourself in these limited words. Still, I feel there is something there, some glimmer of an eternal truth, that perhaps you will see from your vantage point.

I?m exhausted. This morning?s thinking is certainly rewriting the way I use words.

Glam Has Filed For An IPO - Business Insider

Two sources familiar with the matter say that Glam Media, the digital lifestyle-content publisher, has filed confidential documents as part of a new secret IPO process.

Glam got its start offering fashion and gossip content on Glam.com, but has since broadened into food, men's lifestyle, health, and other topics. It's one of the top 10 networks of websites in the U.S., according to ComScore.

This so-called "secret IPO" process, which was created under 2012's Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, permits companies with less than $1 billion in annual revenues to start private discussions with the Securities and Exchange Commission before announcing to the world that they're going public.

There are other technical requirements for going public this way, but the revenue limit is the most significant one. Facebook, for example, wouldn't have been eligible.

The confidential IPO process is becoming more and more common: A recent Ernst & Young study found that 59 percent of eligible companies are taking the confidential-filing route.

After satisfying SEC regulators with private filings, a company files its paperwork publicly 21 days before conducting a roadshow for investors, after which it can list its shares on a market.

A Glam spokesperson declined to comment, as did several Glam investors we contacted.

Glam Media, founded in 2002, has raised $155 million from Accel Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Burda Media, and others.

It also picked up other investors when it bought Ning, a maker of private social networks, in 2011, for a reported $150 million. Ning had raised $119 million from Netscape founder Marc Andreessen, LinkedIn chairman Reid Hoffman, Legg Mason, and Allen & Co., among others. (Andreessen is also an investor in Business Insider.)?Andreessen joined Glam's board.

Business Insider?recently estimated?Glam's 2012 revenues at between $120 million and $150 million, primarily from advertising. Glam owns properties like Glam.com and Bliss.com, and also represents independent Web publishers, selling ads on their sites.

Glam CEO Samir Arora previously founded NetObjects, which went public in 1999. Two years later, after the collapse of the dotcom bubble, NetObjects shut down and sold its software assets. Arora joined Glam a year later.

One source speculated that part of the appeal of the confidential IPO process for Arora, a masterful marketer, may be the mystery and novelty attached to it.

Glam has been flirting with an IPO for years. We reported last May that Glam had picked Goldman Sachs to lead an IPO. (A Goldman spokesperson declined to comment.) But with paperwork actually filed with the SEC, according to our sources, this process finally seems to be getting underway.

Workday, an enterprise-software startup, is the most well-known example of a company that went public under the JOBS Act. Trulia, the online real-estate service, also filed confidentially under the JOBS Act. Both are now trading above their IPO price, which suggests the confidential-filing process hasn't hurt them in the public markets.

Indeed, the biggest benefit of the JOBS Act may come after the IPO, not before it. By getting designated as an "emerging growth company," companies can avoid some SEC fees and regulations that larger public companies must face.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida (Reuters) - American Keegan Bradley says he is sick of being called a 'cheat' by fans for using a long putter, as the controversy intensifies over the rules on anchoring the shortest club in the bag. Pest Control Can Be Easy, And We Want To Help! | A Bridge Home ...

It can be stressful when you first discover those disgusting little creatures living inside your home. Many pests can get into your house in a few seconds. Even with a clean home and a watchful eye on the door, you?re still pest-ready. This article will discuss some common methods of pest control.

Regularly check your home?s foundation for any cracks. As the house settles, cracks and fissures can develop. Pests can enter the house through these cracks. Do not forget to look at the ceiling. You might see some cracks that bugs are getting into.

TIP! Have you discovered carpenter ants? If so, then they almost always mean that you have a bigger problem. Since they just feed on wet wood, your home may have leaks, or worse, rotting wood.

Make sure to take precaution with bedbugs when you are trying to eliminate them. Bedbugs can go without feeding for a whole year. Therefore, you should ensure that any openings in the floors and walls are kept closed. Then they won?t be able to hide out there.

Be sure to check with local authorities before you use pesticides in your home to ensure that they are within code. At times, a chemical that is locally banned can cause you trouble when you want to sell your house. While this is pretty rare in occurrence, it does give you motivation to research what pest control methods are approved and successful in your community.

Are you dealing with an ant infestation? You can remove them by creating a mixture of borax and sugar. While the smell of sugar will attract them, the borax will kill them. Use a quart jar with equal parts of each. Put some holes in the top of the lid to make it easy to sprinkle.

TIP! You should never leave any water laying around outside if you want to keep mosquitoes away. Stagnant water is where mosquitoes deposit their eggs and the larvae develop.

Try talking to friends and family for other tips. If you have mice problems, for instance, one of your neighbors may be too. Even better, they may know some things that you never even thought about. You can also warn your neighbor about a potential problem that may exist in his house at the moment.

Have you seen rodents in your home? Look over your home for cracks these rodents can fit through. Fill any cracks you find with scouring pads, or fill them with poison. Sometimes, odor repellents like mustard oil can be effective.

One way to kill roaches quickly is using diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle the diatomaceous earth wherever you see roaches. This substance does not harm humans. These will get rid of insects right away by eating away at their exoskeleton. When using this approach, you may see more roaches at first, but they should be gone within two weeks.

TIP! If you discover that pests have been in your food, then immediately eliminate the food. Put them in the trash away from your home, so pests can not find their way back in.

Pests are attracted to drains. Flush out these pests by cleaning your drains every month, either by using a snake or by using a liquid cleaner. Debris and such can lead to mold, which can provide pests an ideal environment in which to thrive.

The cleaner you keep your house, the fewer pests that you?ll have inside. Make sure not to leave dirty dishes in the sink. Clean them often. Keep your garbage can clean by washing the lid and container. Be sure to get your garbage out every garbage day. If you work hard, you will get results.

An effective solution for pest control is an electronic pest repellant. You plug these into your outlets, and they will scare rodents away. Humans and pets are able to hear the sound, but it is in no way harmful. Rats and mice hate the sounds and will leave the area.

TIP! Keep your property clean and well-maintained on the outside. You should keep the surrounding areas of your home tidy too.

If you?re trying to battle a mouse or rat problem on your own, keep this in mind: mice and rats will eat almost anything. Any kind of tasty food can be used in traps. You can also use spoiled food, as this works as well.

Mice make campers or trailers their homes quite often. You can effectively keep these pests away by using natural repellents. Small repellent bags smell great and aren?t poisonous, and they?ll shun away mice.

Purchase new appliances if you desire to get rid of the pests in your home. Ask your loved ones for extra toasters and coffee pots, and dispose of the ones in your house. Bugs take over all parts of a house and really like small places, such as inside appliances.

TIP! Inspect your home for standing water which may be in hidden areas. Standing water attracts all kinds of pests.

Spraying hairspray on wasps, bees or other flying pest can immobilize them almost instantly. Not only will this spray kill bugs on contact, but the smell will also deter others from coming.

Do you have trouble with booklice? Throw out the food they?ve invaded, and clean nearby surfaces with water and bleach. Dispose of any contaminated food in a sealed bag.

Be sure and get rid of any fallen trees in your yard. Hack up the trunk and limbs for use as firewood. Use the wood or give it to people. Don?t neglect the stump though. Stumps are just dead pieces of wood, and these attract termites.

TIP! If bees are living around your house, you should call a professional to take care of the problem. It can be tough to identify whether you have an Africanized colony, and the answer is very important to know.

Even though it makes your skin crawl to think about it, the fact is your bedding is full of microscopic organisms. The majority of the population is actually allergic to the infamous dust mite, thus making it even more important to completely eliminate the problem. Launder your bedding in extremely hot water every week, and use pillow covers made from non-permeable material.

Bird food attracts rats. To feed the birds in your yard, use a container that rats are likely to avoid. Metal is good material to use, which helps to deter rats. Remember to also keep the seeds somewhere that rats have a hard time reaching.

Use steel wool to fill up mouse holes. Steel wool will prove nearly impossible for even a rat to chew through. Seal any opening that is over a half inch in diameter. Animals can get through very small openings.

TIP! Marigolds make a great, natural repellent against flying insects in and around the home. Insects can be repelled with marigolds.

Find out where birds are hanging out and eliminate the area if possible. Keep tree branches well pruned to discourage birds from taking up residence. If they land on your ledges, get roosting spikes so they no longer can land.

Try vacuuming every single rug in your home. You will sweep up pests living in the carpeting. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag in an outside receptacle as soon as possible.

Make sure you rinse out any containers you are recycling. Specifically watch out for soda cans, as the sugars in sodas attract many different pests. Be sure to completely rinse out the soda when placing it outdoors or in the garbage.

TIP! Check your plumbing area if you choose to deal with your pest problem. Keep all sinks, pipes and drains free of clogs and check for leaks.

Use some termiticide to kill termites. Termiticides come in two varieties: the kind that kills and the kind that repels. No matter which one you choose, you need to apply termiticide to pretty much every inch of your home, inside and outside. This could require a large amount of termiticide. In fact, it may require over 100 gallons in order to work.

The article you?ve just read has gone over some great ways to deal with your pest problem. If there?s one thing that should be clear from the article, it is that there are many people in your situation. Pests are a problem whether you live in an urban area or a remote rural town. Show your distaste for pests by using the information given here.

If you have a professional install stations to bait mice, make sure you find out where they are placed. You cannot allow your dogs to have access to these bait stations. If your pet or child was to accidentally ingest some of the poison, it could kill them.

Samsung to introduce 'the next Galaxy' on March 14

"Ready 4 the show," an invitation sent to members of the press teases, blatantly hinting that we'll be seeing the Galaxy S 4 ? the highly anticipated follow-up to the Galaxy S III smartphone ? at the event being held by Samsung on March 14.

The event will take place in New York City at 7 p.m. ET. (We'll be there to cover it live, of course.)

The Galaxy S 4 ? we're assuming by the big "4" that the only change to Samsung's incredibly consistent naming approach will be to drop the Roman numerals ? will be the company's newest flagship device.

A poster spotted by AnandTech's Brian Klug during a visit to Samsung's demo room at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January suggests that the Galaxy S 4 could be rocking a 4.99-inch 1080p screen with a whopping 440 pixels per inch. While the iPhone 5 offers the significantly less dense 326 ppi, it's worth noting that it's practically impossible for human eyes to tell the difference. After a certain point, the individual pixels simply become indistinguishable.

That's about all we know (or think we know) about the Galaxy S 4 for now, so Samsung could have plenty of surprises waiting up its sleeves come March 14.

Want to win Twitter friends? Stay short, cheery

Twitter audiences need to be tended to carefully, like a garden with young plants (but hopefully less dirt). There?s all kinds of anecdotal advice about how to be a better tweeter, but now a new study says that the twittizens who grow the most audiences tend to share short, clear, informative tweets.

If most of your followers don?t know you, personal tweets aren?t the best way to go, C.J Hutto, one of the researchers of the group from Georgia Tech, told NBC News. "The ties between people on Twitter are weaker than between people in real life, or on Facebook," he explained.

People are mostly looking for information, the team observed. "Rather than talking about what you had to eat for breakfast or lunch you can talk about an interesting news article that you read," Hutto said.

Hutto and his colleagues scrutinized half a million tweets that 507 people had sent over more than a year. They recorded the length, clarity, and general tone of the tweet. They counted how often the tweeters used hashtags, linked to a website, or used a phrase like "RT" or "HT." They then matched all those numbers against friends and follower counts measured at various times during the course of those 15 months.

What else did they find? Using @-mentions and replies helps build a dedicated following, rather than just a stream of tweets addressed to no one. "Imagine an old professor standing in a lecture hall and broadcasting his lecture, versus direct communication," Hutto explained. "When you're talking to one person it helps you grow your audience."

Also: Bad news or negativity of any kind doesn't do so well. That includes swearing, even a frowning face emoticon. And, clarity is a big bonus. Using full sentences rather than abbreviations as you might on text messages goes a long way in convincing a potential new follow that you are a real person. ?Twitter users apparently seek out well-written content over poorly written content when deciding whether to follow another user,? the team writes. If you stick to a topic, that helps too ? something other researchers have also found.

If you tweet often, perhaps you knew most of this already. But if you're looking to get your numbers up, consider this as free advice.
