NATIONWIDE ? Commending the work of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is the topic of President Obama's weekly address.
The president said this one of a kind independent consumer watch group continues to protect American families from bad financial practices.
Obama said the work of the CFPB in the last few years speaks to its success.
?Because of the work that's been done at the CFPB over the past two years, today, mortgage lenders, student lenders, payday lenders, and credit reporting and debt collection agencies all face greater scrutiny. And if they don't play by the rules, you now have somewhere to go to get some measure of justice. In fact, the CFPB has already addressed more than 175,000 complaints from every state,? said Obama.
The president also said the CFPB also has plans in place to extend a hand to students in debt and to veterans.
Meanwhile, the republican response centered on making changes to the president's health care plan.
Republican Congressmen Tim Griffin and Todd Young say Republicans in the House recently approved the president's plan to delay the employer mandate in the new health care law to help middle class Americans.
They said, with this delay republicans hope to provide the same benefits to regular Americans that big corporations will get from being exempt from that portion of the law.
Still, the two congressmen feel there's still more work to be done on the president's health care law.
?Republicans will continue to do everything we can to protect all Americans from the president's top-down, one-size-fits-all, Washington-knows-best approach to health care that is driving up costs and hurting our economy,? said Rep. Tim Griffin, (R) Indiana.
?Bottom line: the sooner we can delay, dismantle, and repeal the president's health care law, the sooner we can get people back to work and focus on expanding opportunity for everyone,? said Rep. Todd Young, (R) Arkansas.
The two congressmen called on the Senate to listen to their proposals and act on them quickly.
