Parks and rec praised by Special Olympics

The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department has been recognized by Special Olympics Georgia for its ongoing support.

The department received the Training for Life award from the organization, which provides special needs students and adults with athletic opportunities.

Susan Darlington, local coordinator for Special Olympics Forsyth County, presented the award during Thursday?s meeting of the Forsyth County commission.

?We cannot say enough about our parks and recreation,? Darlington said. ?They have proven time and time again that they are committed to supporting Special Olympics Forsyth and strive to include many of our athletes in their everyday activities.?

The department provides the local program with facilities for its annual games, which serve more than 350 athletes.

Department staff members lead events and support volunteers at the games, and also support the annual Battle of the Bats Softball Invitational, which draws hundreds of athletes from several states.

Darlington noted that the department has contributed to the availability of leisure and sports activities for the local athletes.

?With their support, we are able to continue to strive to meet many of the social and healthy living needs of our citizens with developmental disabilities,? she said.
