ASUW reconsiders Odegaard Library gaming ban | The Daily

The ASUW Student Senate began debate about a resolution opposing a policy that bans the use of Odegaard Library computers for gaming during peak hours, 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The ban was adopted last May after library staff received multiple complaints regarding noise and lack of computer availability due to the computers being used for gaming.

If passed, this resolution would not require Odegaard Library officials to change the policy but would inform administrators of student opinion on the issue.

Senator Kevin Shotwell, who sponsored the resolution, said he disagrees with the ban not because he enjoys playing games on library computers, but because he believes the ban ?infringes on students? first-amendment rights.? He said student money goes toward funding the library computers through the Student Technology Fee and students should be able to use the computers in any way they see fit.

?I don?t care that they ban video-game software; I care that they ban some form of free speech,? Shotwell said.?

Shotwell acknowledged there had been a problem with video games in the library in the past, as he was distracted by gamers. But he said there were better ways to make libraries more study-friendly.

?How about we just trust students and enforce a strict policy of no distraction?? Shotwell said.

Senator George Rowe agreed with Shotwell?s suggestion. He said the problems with gaming in Odegaard have been with the noise associated with the activity, not the activity itself.?

Shotwell also suggested students approach those using the computers in such ways and ask them to move or be quiet. Senator Teos Bisbee disagreed with that suggestion.

?I totally agree video games are awesome and everything,? Bisbee said, ?but I think it?s really the intimidation factor. Not a lot of people are going to ask someone to get off the computer because they?re gaming. I know I wouldn?t.?

Senator Bruce Adsero argued that students shouldn?t be prohibited from gaming just because other students are too shy to ask for a computer or remind other library users to be quiet. He said students who are too shy to assert themselves should explore other computer services the university offers.

?Maybe you could make use of other UW services like checking out a laptop if that confrontation is going to be a problem,? Adsero said.

ASUW Director of University Affairs Michael Kutz, who is unable to vote in senate, said he would like to hear the opinion of library officials before making a decision on the matter. He suggested tabling the resolution until the next senate meeting so Jill McKinstry, the Odegaard library director, could be present to comment.

Senators voted to postpone consideration of the resolution until a UW Libraries official could attend a senate meeting to talk about the gaming ban.
