When it comes to Windows RT, Microsoft will be the last man standing

I believe that you're right. Have seen one in action & wasn't impressed at all. It is very well possible that one could buy one of these & never want a Windows brand product again.

And unlike Windows 8, there's a lot of add-on hardware that won't work. Accessories must be "Windows RT" certified. Apps has to be obtained direct from the MS Store, which further handicaps the user.

And to think, judging by the specs, who in their right mind is going to give $1,000 for this?

Acer Iconia W700 - Microsoft Windows

These are overpriced toys & Windows RT is a joke. MS, as always, gets on the wagon too late. Tablets & phones aren't what made MS what is is today (or was until 2012), sales of Windows & Office were.

Come the year 2020, MS likely won't have the 90+% user share that it now has, if they keep shoving this product line down users throats. The majority of portable users still prefers the 15.6" - 17.3" notebooks over low powered toys.

'Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.': Clark Gregg Talks The Return Of Coulson, Joss Whedon On Ties To The Movies

The cast and executive producers of Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." took the stage at the Television Critics Association Summer 2013 press tour to declassify more intel on ABC's anticipated comic book series, a show which apparently stemmed from the desire to find a way for Clark Gregg's character, Agent Phil Coulson, to return from the grave after the events of "The Avengers."

Gregg admitted that he'd felt a certain finality after a "certain Asgardian fellow" impaled his character during the blockbuster movie. "I made jokes ... 'Is there a rewrite coming?' And it was really clear that I was dead. I had a great run and I thought what Joss did with the character was a magnificent resolve." Then, writer-director Joss Whedon called him five months after "The Avengers," promised him that Coulson's return wouldn't undermine the reality of the movie, and after hearing Whedon's plan, Gregg said, "I was very on board."

Executive producer Jeph Loeb added, "There was never going to be a show called 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' without Clark. That's the way it started ... 'We know we want Clark; how do we start there and move out?' And then Jed and Maurissa and Joss came up with all these wonderful characters that are aboard the bus and will take us each week to a brand new epic adventure."

Loeb also reiterated that "Marvel is one universe" across its mediums -- publishing, games, TV shows and movies -- and that they'll "try to follow the continuity as best [they] can," relying on fans to tell them if something contradicts something else they've released.

Still, Loeb emphasized that the series is for both newcomers and existing fans of the Marvel universe. "Our hope is that everyone who is watching TV at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays is watching our show."

Executive producer Jeffrey Bell agreed, "We hope this is big and broad enough for everybody, but that there are specific things that Marvel fans will recognize."

Whedon said that, in terms of synergy between the series and the Marvel cinematic universe, "There will be as much as we can allow. We're still working that out. It's a fluid process. The important thing is it?s a fun opportunity, but it?s not the reason behind the show. We don?t want just to be an Easter egg farm. We want people to come back because of these people and not because of some connection to the movie universe. This show has to work for people who aren?t going to see those movies and haven?t seen them before."

The series has an admirably cinematic look and scope, something that Bell said resulted from the experience of the writers, director and behind-the-scenes crew. "Both Marvel and ABC have been very generous with us. We have a responsibility to Marvel to look awesome and terrific," he said. "But really, it's these people and their lives that we hope you'll come back to every week."

Although fans will inevitably be lured by Whedon's signature wit and one-liners, showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon wrote one of the pilot's most hilarious scenes, which bodes well for the show when Joss steps back to focus on "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" sequel.

"I got the best writers I know to do this and and actors who can do pretty much anything so that I could do less -- that's always the way to run a show," Joss admitted of leaving the series in his brother and Tancharoen's hands.

Joss also praised Marvel and ABC's lack of notes. "We've gotten trust, which is different than freedom ... My collaboration with the with Marvel on the movie was pretty extraordinary and, for me, unprecedented. It wasn?t a question of them getting out of the way. We really worked that story together. ABC and Marvel have been very active in making sure the show is what they want for their company and their network and their audiences and, at the same time, very supportive of the vision that we first laid out to them. The most important thing is that we all are trying to make the same show. It?s not really about 'Oh, we?re past them, and we don?t want have to deal with them.' We?re all on the same page, which has occasionally not happened to me [in my TV work]," Joss noted.

"They wanted to make sure our investment in characters and their interaction and their evolution was as big as the case of the week. They wanted to make sure that people were coming for the recurring story, as well as for the story that would conclude in a single episode, which, to me, is how I?ve done all of my shows. So they basically said, 'Would you please do it that way that you do it and not learn a new skill?' And that made me very happy."

Still, Joss said that he planned to be involved "as much as an executive producer can who's also making a movie."

The show features a diverse cast and an array of accents, including Scottish actor Iain De Caestecker, and English Elizabeth Henstridge, who pointed out that their different nationalities contribute to the authenticity of the group: "This is a team of misfits coming together," she said. "None of these people are home and they're finding their home with each other."

Gregg added, "As someone who has been working for S.H.I.E.L.D. for some time now ... one of the things that always excited me about S.H.I.E.L.D., both in the comics and in the cinematic universe and now the television universe, is that it's a transnational organization that's protecting humanity and bringing different parts of humanity together in the wake of 'The Avengers,' and so that always felt very organic to what S.H.I.E.L.D. is."

The producers also plan to film internationally to add to the global scale of the organization.

Joss is no stranger to writing about outcasts and misfits, and admitted he was attracted to "the idea of the people who don't have the superpowers; who didn't get the hammer; who didn't get the super-soldier serum; the idea that everybody matters ... the underdog, the common man. Clark was that sort of audience proxy in the movies, and the show is about that sense of, 'What about the rest of us? How do we cope with this?' It's television, so they're incredibly good at what they do and ridiculously attractive, but they still don't fall under the category of super."

He added, "I'm always interested in people who are in very pressure-cooker situations that are not necessarily world famous for it. I like the people who are on the fringe of things. We have this organization, we have the history from the comic books, but these guys are out there by themselves. It's going to be both an advantage and real trouble for them. We can bond with them in a way that they don?t have every resource, and they don?t have the answers [thanks to some] deus ex machina at the end of every episode: ?Here comes S.H.I.E.L.D. to solve it.? It?s up to these guys. And that?s what really makes a group bond, and that?s the sort of thing I like to write."

Jed described the format of the show as facing a "challenge every week ... and hopefully the characters will be dealing with each other enough that there's stuff to weave into these standalone episodes."

Joss promised, 'Every week, it's not going to be some new hero; there could be a device, a mystery ... There are so many aspects to what's happened since everybody in the world found out there's a superhero team and aliens that invaded New York." He added that he was excited to dig into "the spy stuff, the hero stuff, the heartfelt stuff," so that "every week ... feels a little different."

Joss noted he could neither "confirm nor deny" whether "Angel" alum J. August Richards would return after the pilot, but, he said, "I thought he was great too, so do that math."

Unlike some of "Buffy" and "Angel's" more surreal installments, Joss officially ruled out a musical episode on "S.H.I.E.L.D.," but admitted that there was the potential for creative storytelling choices. "It has to come from the show. 'Buffy' lent itself to a musical because it was so hyperbolically emotional," he said. "But there is an element of absurdity in the Marvel universe that is satirical and bizarre -- the fact that we can tap into that will stop the show from feeling too self-indulgent or dry ... We're not looking for a cool angle -- it's always going to be built from the characters."

As for future plans after writing and directing the "Avengers" sequel, Joss said that he's not married to returning to TV or movies specifically. "The goal is never about the medium -- it's always about the next story," he said. "It's all about the thing I've never done before ... I like not knowing what's next; it's all about making people care about people. I just want to keep telling stories, and if someone pays me, that's also good."

The iPad Pact: Don?t Let Tablets Get a Bad Rap the Way TV Has

Child Development

Posted on August 02, 2013 - 03:40:19 by

If you listen to the American Academy of Pediatrics, TV gets a pretty bad rap. I maintain that a little bit of it is not just OK but practically essential for us parents who live in the real world. It's those parents who leave their set on all day as background noise who really make the rest of us look bad. Still, the point is increasingly moot, because these days, my kids would rather play with iPads anyway.

?

Well, there's some good news. The American Academy of Pediatrics has been mostly silent on the subject of kids and iPads while they're waiting for data to come in. The AAP even has its own app, so who are they to judge?

?

OK, parents. This is our moment. We may have lost the TV battle, but there's time to convince the experts that we can be trusted with these wonderful new gizmos. So while the jury's out, let me suggest some guidelines for responsible iPad usage that'll keep tablets from getting demonized the way TV has:

?

1. Do fill your iPad with fun educational apps. iPads aren't cheap, but at least most of the apps are. Better still, there are a ton of educational apps like Monkey Preschool Lunchbox and Endless ABC that are fun and intellectually stimulating, too. They teach important concepts and reward kids for learning. If you have to plant a kid in front of an iPad for a few minutes, it's nice to know they're at least getting acquainted with the alphabet.

?

2. Don't let the iPad take over your job as a parent. Sure, your iPad can read books to your kids, but that doesn't give you the OK to stop doing it. Yes, it's great for them to hear Cinderella speak in her own voice, but that's never going to be as good as hearing Daddy's impression of her, or Mommy's take on Sam-I-Am... if only because it's good for kids to laugh at their parents once in a while. Likewise, an iPad is never going to teach your kid to ride a bike or nag him to finish his vegetables, so you're not off the hook there, either.

?

3. Do monitor them. I don't hover over my kids and watch everything they do on the iPad, because that would defeat the purpose of using it to help me get stuff done. But I do check in regularly to see what they're up to. After all, I don't want them resetting my high scores on Candy Crush.

?

4. Don't let your tablet become just another TV. My kids know how to find Netflix on the iPad, but most of the time, I limit them to using interactive apps. They usually find those more fun anyway.

?

5. Do let them explore. One of the most amazing things about watching kids play with iPads is how little guidance they need. The interface is so intuitive that they can usually figure out how to get it to do what they want, or at least get distracted by something more interesting while they're trying. They don't need me to micromanage every swipe of their fingers, so I don't. I just watch them, amazed at what they're able to accomplish on their own and confident that, as they grow up, they'll be able to handle the tools their generation will use to navigate technology.

?

6. Don't let your kid use an iPad at the playground. Yes, I've seen kids do this. It's kind of like wearing headphones to the symphony so you don't miss the baseball game. You might as well have stayed home. In the same category, if a little less offensive, are parents who let their kids use iPads at restaurants. I admit I've caved to my kids on this one a couple of times when they were extra-cranky and threatening to disrupt other patrons. In general, though, they're there to have dinner with me, not the Temple Run guy. If an iPad becomes a means to avoid interacting with your kids, then that's a problem.

?

7. Do disable in-app purchases. Like I said, kids are pretty good at getting the iPad to do whatever they want, and that includes downloading the $4.99 neon colors for their "free" coloring app or unlocking the $9.99 cephalopod pack for their virtual fish tank. Go to Settings -> General, enable restrictions and put a passcode on your device. Then don't tell your kids what it is! If they want to buy something, they have to get you to do it for them.

?

I truly believe as a parent that iPads are good for my kids -- and, I'll be honest, they're good for me, too. Without the distraction value they provide, I'd never get a chance to make a phone call uninterrupted. So let's not let the irresponsible parents ruin tablets the way they did with TV. Let's make a pact to use iPads as an enhancement to parenting, not a replacement for it.

Agriculture sustainable way of making a living, says GBM - Daily Mail

SCOTT-OPENS-SHOWBy CHRISTINE CHISHA and KAPALA CHISUNKA
MINISTER of Defence Geoffrey Mwamba has urged Zambians to venture into agriculture as it is a sustainable way of making a living.
And Vice-President?s wife Charlotte Scott, has described this year?s 87th edition of the Agriculture and Commercial Show as an eye-opener for farmers to diversify crops and adapt to climate change.
Mr Mwamba, who pledged Government?s support towards the sector, said agriculture is the mainstay of the Zambian economy.
?Why should we allow foreigners to take over the agriculture sector when we are able to work more than them? In fact, I have been informed by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock that there are various support programmes for farmers,? he said.
Mr Mwamba was speaking in Lusaka after touring stands at the Agriculture and Commercial Show yesterday.
The 87th edition of the Agriculture and Commercial Show is running under the theme ?Business in a changing environment?.
The minister said it is time Zambia became a nation of producers to feed the entire nation and export excess produce.
Mr Mwamba, who described the exhibitions at the show as impressive, said he has been encouraged to venture into agriculture in Kasama.
Mr Mwamba expressed optimism that this year?s show will be a success and toured nine local stands.
The minister arrived at the showgrounds around 09:40 and was met by Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Bob Sichinga and other senior Government officials.
Mr Sichinga said his ministry targets to produce 150,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for the 2013/2014 farming season.
He said 70,000 tonnes of fertiliser will go towards the Fertiliser Input Support Programme (FISP) and the rest will go to the open market.
And Dr Scott said apart from farmers adapting to climate change and conservation farming, this year?s theme will help business people to diversify in their marketing strategy.
She said she was impressed that both farmers and business people have come up with new ways of doing business.
She pinpointed companies like Zesco, who are working tirelessly to meet the demand for electricity countryside, mitigate load shedding and build more hydro-power stations.
Dr Scott was also impressed with young farmers from rural areas who she said have more information and knowledge on climate change.
She commended NIPA for coming up with degree programmes and building a modern library.
She arrived at the Show Grounds around 09:10 hours and toured eight stands in the company of show society past president Elizabeth Nkumbula.

848 Mini Coopers Parade on Mackinac Bridge, But Fail to Win World Record

MACKINAW CITY, Mich. (AP) -- The parade of small cars that crossed the Mackinac Bridge was large, but fell short of setting a Guinness World Records mark.

State Transportation spokesman James Lake says 848 Mini Coopers made the five-mile, one-way crossing Saturday morning from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace.

Officials have said the current record mark for a Mini Cooper parade of 1,450 cars was set in 2009.

Drivers of the Mini Coopers gathered on the Lower Peninsula side of the bridge before setting out for the Upper Peninsula side.

The event involved the Mackinac Bridge Authority, a Mini dealership from Grand Rapids and owners of the small cars.

Oil arriving through the Energy East Pipeline would feed refineries in Quebec and New Brunswick that at present get 86 per cent of their crude supply from the international market at much higher prices than they would pay for crude from Alberta. Conversion of the existing Canadian Mainline natural gas pipeline for carriage of crude oil would account for slightly over two-thirds the projected length. The remainder would be new construction. Cost estimates range up to $12 billion, excluding the transfer value of the Canadian Mainline.?(Related article:?Canada Threatens U.S. with Oil Trains if Keystone XL Not Built)

The announcement follows by three weeks the signature by Alberta province of a memorandum of understanding to pay up to $5 billion in tolls for transportation of its crude oil to eastern Canada, if a pipeline is built. The proposal still requires regulatory approval, but the conditions in favor of this have been lining themselves up for some time.

The company anticipates beginning the regulatory process next year, with first oil flowing to Montreal and the Quebec City region by 2017, and to Saint John, New Brunswick, by 2018. TransCanada and IrvingOil have formed a joint venture, to construct, own, and operate a new deep water marine terminal at Canaport in Saint John.?

UCF Partnering with Barry University for Accelerated Law Program

Academics, Beyond UCF, Business, News ? By Jacob Sadowsky on August 3, 2013 at 5:03 pm Tweet

The University of Central Florida has partnered with the Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law have to offer an all new 3+3 Accelerated Law Program.

According to UCF, the new program will allow qualified UCF students to earn both a bachelor?s degree in legal studies from UCF and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Barry Law in six years. Typically, students pursuing a J.D. complete a four-year undergraduate program, followed by three years of law school.

Under the UCF-Barry Law 3+3 program, students will spend three years at UCF and three at Barry Law, completing the requirements for their UCF bachelor?s degree during their first year of law school.

?This partnership with UCF will be a game-changer for the next generation of law students in Orlando,? Barry Law Dean Leticia M. Diaz said following a signing ceremony with Michael Frumkin, dean of UCF?s College of Health and Public Affairs. ?Barry Law has had a long and rewarding relationship with UCF, and the school already is well-represented in our student body. The 3+3 program will allow UCF?s most talented students to advance the path to their professional legal careers.?

The program will be the first of its kind in the Orlando area. UCF?s Legal Studies Chair James Beckman said the partnership?s potential is enormous.

?Barry Law is a popular choice each year for numerous UCF students who desire to stay in Orlando after their undergraduate career,? he explained. ?We?re thrilled to be taking steps to solidify our relationship with Barry Law ? and our students will definitely benefit from this new partnership in years to come.?

Deans Diaz and Frumkin signed an agreement for the 3+3 program this week. Once formally approved by the universities, the program will be available to students entering UCF in the fall of 2014, UCF said.

Powerball jackpot reaches $300M for Saturday

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Dreamers hoping to strike it rich quick plunked down $2 a ticket hoping to win a Powerball jackpot estimated to be at least $300 million.

The winning numbers for Saturday's drawing were 21, 24, 36, 42, and 45, with the Powerball 15.

The revised estimated jackpot wasn't available immediately after Saturday's numbers were drawn, but it was expected to fall well below the record $590.5 million jackpot that was won in May by an 84-year-old Florida widow.

Saturday's pot was big enough though to attract casual players who only buy tickets when they think the payoff is big and potentially life-changing.

The odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 175.2 million.

Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A Look at South Africa?s Carbon Trading Potential

Glenn Hodes,
Senior Program
Manager, UNEP

2 August 2013 - According to Glenn Hodes-senior program manager (UNEP), the carbon market in South Africa will help to level the playing field by making renewable projects more attractive to investors. Small-scale renewable projects (less than 50 MW) which are pursued in South Africa due to dispersed populations, have struggled to obtain finance from large companies and banks. However, with carbon trading, more attention will be brought to these projects. ?This would certainly deal with the poverty issue more effectively as the power is closer to where the demand is,? Hodes says.

But, how will carbon trading benefit South Africa?s renewable energy projects? Hodes says that if there is a price on carbon, whether through tax or a trading regime, private companies will be incentivised to invest in renewable energy projects and technology. ?I think the private sector is for carbon trading. It sets a clear market signal.? ?
?
But why hasn?t carbon trading taken off? Hodes blames this on uncoordinated attempts, regulatory and policy challenges. He explains that the implementation thereof and global connections can make it a challenge for carbon trading to work. There have also been circumstances under which baseline-and-credit CDM schemes have resulted in the maltreatment of indigenous peoples and their environment. There have also been cases of trade fraud and accounting discrepancies.

Low levels of awareness as to how to access this market as well as a poorly resourced department are also to blame, according to the experts. South Africa has already missed a number of opportunities as it failed to capitalise on the first commitment period (2008 to 2012) of the Kyoto Protocol. Until the 17th international annual climate conference, COP17 in 2011, opportunity for South African carbon project developers was mostly to generate and sell carbon offsets (CERs). These CERs were sold from countries classified as developing countries to companies in developed countries which are bound by the emissions reduction targets of the Kyoto Protocol to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions. The Clean Development Mechanism has in the past given South Africa the opportunity to benefit from registering carbon credits or CERs. Other developing countries such as China, India and Brazil managed to register hundreds of emissions reduction projects under the CDM and got developed European countries to finance sustainable development in their countries.

Currently, only 22 South African Project Design Documents (PDDs) have been registered by the CDM executive board as CDM projects, with only nine having actually issued CERs. In comparison to other developing countries, South Africa seems to have missed out on significant clean development opportunities.

However, when the 2015 South African carbon tax comes in to effect, the demand for carbon credits via the voluntary market in South Africa will impact the country?s carbon trading. To ensure increased tax free thresholds, companies will be encouraged to reduce their CO2 emissions. To help them reduce their emissions to reduce tax liabilities, South African companies will most likely be able to purchase carbon credits from verifiable projects to offset a proportion of their carbon obligation. This means that there is scope for South African carbon projects to sell their credits in South Africa to local companies via a regional carbon trading scheme. There is talk that companies will be able to offset their tax liability by buying local carbon credits equivalent to 5% to 10% of their carbon tax liability. This will have an impact on the liquidity of the local market as a result of increased demand for local credits which will see a boost to local carbon project development.

PH acquiring French vessel for South China Sea

MANILA - The Philippines said Saturday it is purchasing a surplus French Navy vessel to boost its forces in the South China Sea where it has an ongoing territorial dispute with China.

The 26-year-old "La Tapageuse" vessel is likely to be the first of several French ships that will be acquired by the Philippine coastguard as it contends with increasingly assertive Chinese forces.

The 54.8-meter patrol ship will cost six million Euros ($7.97 million) and is due to arrive in the country by April next year, a coastguard statement said.

The ship, which is armed with two cannon and two machine-guns, was inspected before acquisition and is good for 20 more years of service, the coastguard said.

"This French vessel is multi-functional and it would be a major contribution to our fleet, particularly in our search and rescue operations," coastguard chief Rear Admiral Rodolfo Isorena was quoted as saying in the statement.

The Philippines is also "finalizing" with the French government the purchase of four brand-new 24-meter and one 82-meter multipurpose vessels, Isorena said.

These new ships would arrive in the first quarter of 2015, the statement added, without specifying their cost.

Isorena also recalled that the Philippine coastguard was already set to acquire 10 multi-role patrol boats under an aid program with Japan.

The announcement came as a second-hand US Hamilton-class cutter acquired by the Philippine Navy sailed into the country's waters, where it will also help in patrolling the South China Sea.

Tensions have risen in recent years over China's increasingly-forceful claims to almost all of the South China Sea, even up to the coast of its neighbors like the Philippines.

These tensions have worsened since Chinese government vessels seized the Scarborough Shoal, a South China Sea outcrop just 230 kilometers east of the main Philippine island of Luzon, last year.

The Philippines has also complained about the presence of Chinese navy vessels near the Manila-controlled Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands.

The Philippines has one of the most poorly-equipped militaries in the region and has been trying to beef up its armed forces in the face of the maritime disputes.

Geronimo Dos Santos Cleared Of Hepatitis B

Geronimo Dos Santos Cleared Of Hepatitis B
Posted by Joseph Lee?on 08.01.2013

He'll debut in the UFC this year...

MMA Junkie reports that Geronimo "Mondragon" Dos Santos (32-14 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has been medically cleared and will return to the UFC. He was set to fight Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 153 in October, but was pulled when a blood test showed he had hepatitis B. UFC officials confirmed he was never released from his contract.

Dos Santos had a yearlong chemotherapy treatment and now has a viral count of zero, which means he's been cured. A test came back successful in March, as did a second test last month. Dos Santos still has to complete some more clerical steps before he can return, but his UFC debut will likely happen before the end of the year, even though an opponent or return date haven't been announced.

He was once a sparring partner for Lyoto Machida. He has an eleven-fight win streak. In 32 wins, he has 21 knockouts and nine submissions. He has only went to a decision once in his wins. He has defeated names like Antonio Mendes and Assuerio Silva. He once fought Junior Dos Santos but lost via first-round TKO due to a cut.

Together Alone: Computers, Technology & Kids | Psych Central

Together Alone: Computers, Technology & KidsWhat?s happening in the ad world these days? One TV ad running in my area is of a mother who, the narrator chirps, is a master multitasker. She is on a cell phone while making her kids breakfast and sending them off for the day. She?s on the cell phone while doing the grocery shopping with her kids.

She doesn?t even take that phone off her ear when going through the checkout line. Yes, she?s smiling all the time but how is it that whoever is on the other end of that phone is more important than relating to her children and the people in front of her?

Another ad: A woman tells us she is in charge of the family finances and she is so, so happy that she?s found a bundle of cable services that is faster than her old company. We follow her through the house as she indicates her daughter in her room on a computer, her husband in the living room on his laptop and her son in the family room on his tablet. Everyone is happy to have speedy Internet. Everyone is in a different room.

Together alone. Are the ads reflecting American life or are they showing us what we should accept as ?normal?? The people who make the ads know what sells. What they seem to be selling these days is the idea that it is normative for family members to be more interested in their electronics than each other. They may even be right.

According to a recent study from the Kaiser Family Foundation, kids between the ages of 8 to 18 are now spending more than seven and a half hours a day on devices with screens (computers, TVs, and other electronics.) That doesn?t count time spent texting or talking on cell phones. Meanwhile, research shows that American working parents spend an average of 19 minutes a day of quality time with their children! A study by the U.S. Department of Education found that mothers spend less than 30 minutes a day talking with their children while other polls show that fathers spend an average of 15 minutes per day.

Do the math! Who, or rather what, is spending the most time with our children?

Yes, I know. Computers are a fact of life. A kid who grows up in a home without one is at a decided disadvantage. More and more teachers assume the kids have one available and create assignments that require the ability to search the Internet for information. Social inclusion seems to require it. Cell phones provide a measure of safety for kids who are home alone or who are traveling from place to place.

But there?s a dark side. The time with computers can slide from use to abuse so gradually that we barely notice. That?s why the multitasker mom in the TV ad is so disturbing. She probably isn?t aware of how that little box on her ear has separated her from her children and her community. She thinks she can both be on the phone and in life. As happy as she seems to be, she?s missing interactions that are important to her children?s development and to her relationship with them. She?s missing the opportunity to give her kids a warm send-off in the morning. She isn?t teaching her kids about nutrition, budgeting, and courtesy at the grocery store. The message she is giving them is that they are along for her ride, not important in their own right.

As connected as everyone seems to be with the social world, it takes some effort to make genuine connections within the family. Kids need the nurturing that only another human being can provide. They need role models from life, not from TV, about how to be an adult, how to be in loving relationship with a partner, and how to parent their children. They need more protection than ?nannyware? can provide from material that is too mature or too stimulating for them to handle. They need to learn how to get information from people as well as from Google. They need parents to monitor their progress and school and to teach them to value schooling. They need gentle teaching by loving parents about what is important culturally and spiritually.

The mom who happily takes us through her perfect house, finding her perfectly happy family members in separate corners, should be concerned. Is her tour just a moment in time, or is it a reflection of the general state of relationships in her family? If it is the latter, she and her husband have some talking to do about how to fix their lack of connection with their kids.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has weighed in on the subject. They recommend that parents establish ?screen-free? zones in our homes. That means no TVs or computers in kids? bedrooms and limiting entertainment time on computers to two hours a day or less. Further, they stress the importance of monitoring what our kids are watching (and playing if in online gaming) for quality.

It almost doesn?t matter what adults do with kids as long as there is an opportunity to talk, to have affectionate physical contact and to pass on information, values, and beliefs. Having a game of catch outside, chatting while making dinner together or washing the car or snuggling up on the couch to read stories all provide the one-on-one, adult-to-kid time that gives our kids things no screen, no matter what the app, can.

SMU loses lead athletics fundraiser to Towson University

Southern Methodist University has lost its lead athletics fundraiser Tim Leonard to Towson University. An SMU spokesman says the university is looking for a replacement.

Southern Methodist University's lead athletics program fundraiser, Tim Leonard, plans to leave the university to become athletic director of Towson University in Baltimore.

Leonard is expected to be introduced to the media and members of the Towson community at a news conference on Friday. He plans to start his role on Aug. 19, the university said.

SMU's athletic program doesn't expect a negative impact from Leonard's departure, spokesman Brad Sutton said.

"This is no different than any other transition in our office," Sutton told the Dallas Business Journal. "We will begin a national search for a qualified candidate. We have great support from a fundraising standpoint ... there are many people to fill the gap."

Leonard spent five years as senior associate athletic director for external affairs. In his role, he oversaw all fundraising, sales and revenue-generating efforts for the university, according to the Dallas Business Journal's sister publication the Baltimore Business Journal.

Sutton says he expects the university to move quickly in the search for a new lead athletics fundraiser.
