Virginia Garcia to host health screening day for children in Cornelius ...

On Father's Day in 1975, six-year-old Virginia Garcia died in North Plains from an infected cut on her foot. The daughter of migrant farm workers, economic, cultural and language barriers prevented her from accessing healthcare to treat the simple wound.

Her namesake, the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, plans to host a free health screening day. To honor Garcia's legacy, the Cornelius Wellness Center will conduct the screenings Monday for children ages 5 to 18.

Michele Horn, relations officer at the Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation, said the Cornelius clinic's health providers were looking for ways to engage with children.

"The wellness center allowed us the space to do these kinds of things we wanted to do before," she said. "They wanted to think of a way to get kids off to a great start for the summer."

Children will receive "passports" they can use to access several activities, such as height/weight stations, healthy food tastings, fitness classes and a tour of the community gardens. They can also sign up for Cornelius Library's summer reading programs and Centro Cultural's educational classes at that time.

Prizes will be awarded to children who complete the activities and a drawing will be held for another special prize.
